What is a “Volksmarch?”

A walk or hike sponsored by a Volksmarch club. Started in Germany, clubs were started in the U.S. in 1979. Today there are 350 clubs in the United States, which hold over 3000 walking events each year.

The Sinks Canyon Volksmarch uses a section of the Canyon Trail and the Falls Trail to make a 6 or 12 mile hike (10 or 20 kilometers). The hike begins and ends at the Visitor Center. Several Wyoming State Parks and Historic Sites have Volksmarch Trails. The trails are marked by the yellow sign with the International Volksmarch symbol on them (it looks like an upside down pine tree).

It doesn’t cost anything to participate, but people wishing to get credit for their walk from the International Volkssport organization must obtain a start card and have it stamped when they are done at the Visitor Center. Participants can earn awards and medals from the International organization.

People wishing to can hike all or part of the trail on their own.

You can access a map of the Volksmarch here in the Maps area of this website.
