Middle Fork of the Popo Agie

The Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River is an excellent cold water fishery, supporting many fish. Fish, like all wildlife, need food water, air and cover. For trout this means clear, clean, cold water that contains enough oxygen, as well as plants and insects for food. Fish also need protective cover such as deep pools, undercut banks and overhanging streamside vegetation, logs and large rocks – all of which provide shelter from the main currant and predators. The Popo Agie is fed by rain and snowmelt from the high peaks and lakes along the Continental Divide.

In the Middle Fork Rainbow and Brook trout are the most common fish. Browns and Cutthroats can also be found.

You can fish anywhere in the canyon except the Rise and the stretch of water downstream of it to under the bridge over Highway 131.

You need a valid Wyoming Game and Fish Department fishing license to fish in the canyon.

Aquatic Insects

Aquatic insects indicate clean and healthy water. Mayflies, caddisflies and stoneflies all thrive here and are a favorite food of trout.
